Bush Bangs The Iran War Drum Loudly

by Pamela Leavey

Just when you thought we had had enough lies and terrifying predictions of the terror in the world from BushCo, think again… The Iran drum is beating loudly

In a speech to the American Legion veterans group on Tuesday, Bush demanded “that Iran end any support for extremists in Iraq “at once” and raised the specter of a “nuclear holocaust” in the Middle East if Tehran gets atomic weapons.” This is nuts

Bush branded the Islamic Republic “the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism,” citing its backing of Hamas, Hezbollah, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Shiite fighters killing US troops in Iraq.

“And Iran’s active pursuit of technology that could lead to nuclear weapons threatens to put a region already known for instability and violence under the shadow of a nuclear holocaust,” he told the American Legion veterans group.

“Iran’s actions threaten the security of nations everywhere, and the United States is rallying friends and allies to isolate Iran’s regime, to impose economic sanctions. We will confront this danger before it is too late,” he said.

Bush, whose speech was billed a defense of US efforts in Iraq, said Tehran must starve Shiite fighters in Iraq of weapons, equipment and training whether or not Iran’s leaders know about such operations and have given their blessing.

It’s really nuts… Bush is preparing to jump out of his own damn frying pan in Iraq into a nuclear freakin meltdown in Iran. Adding to the whole WTF specter of the Iraq/Iran situation, the BBC is reporting that U.S. forces had detained seven Iranians in Iraq and then released them. The seven men were “helping rebuild electricity power stations in Iraq.” That’s right, they were not “gun toting killers. No, they were in Iraq doing something we haven’t been quite so helpful with, helping them work on their power grid.” Does it sound a bit like they looking for the scapegoats to push the plan?

Check out what Larry Johnson has to say on No Quarter, about the latest banging of the Iran War drum (h/t to at -Largely). The fear-mongering has just escalated my friends and it has an all too familiar ring to it.

Raw Story has the big scoop:

The United States has the capacity for and may be prepared to launch without warning a massive assault on Iranian uranium enrichment facilities, as well as government buildings and infrastructure, using long-range bombers and missiles, according to a new analysis.

The paper, “Considering a war with Iran: A discussion paper on WMD in the Middle East” – written by well-respected British scholar and arms expert Dr. Dan Plesch, Director of the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London, and Martin Butcher, a former Director of the British American Security Information Council (BASIC) and former adviser to the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament – was exclusively provided to RAW STORY late Friday under embargo.

Oh and let’s not leave out this little tidbit, the new president of France wants to play too. Ian Welsh has more on that on The Agonist.

Congress reconvenes next week. Let them know: Enough Is Enough.

One Response to “Bush Bangs The Iran War Drum Loudly”

  1. It’s not good either way, but it may not be totally nuts. Hopefully he’s not serious, and is just going with an opening like this so that when it comes time to negotiate what he really wants for Iraq it will look less demented than other things he’s been saying and Congress will give it to him just to keep him apeased.
