Senator Craig Withdraws From Role in Romney Campaign, Conservative Calls for Resignation
by Pamela LeaveyThe Boston Globe reports tonight that Senator Larry Craig of Idaho has resigned “as Senate co-chairman for Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign.” The resignation comes in the wake of the disclosure that Craig has pleaded guilty earlier this month “to disorderly conduct after an incident in a men’s bathroom.” As I reported here earlier, Roll Call broke the news.
Romney’s campaign said in a statement, “Senator Craig has stepped down from his role with the campaign. He did not want to be a distraction and we accept his decision.”
Conservative pundit and talk radio host Hugh Hewitt is sounding the alarm and calling for Craig, who is up for re-election in ‘08, to resign. Hewitt says:
I realize that I did not say this about Senator Vitter, but Craig’s behavior is so reckless and repulsive that an immediate exit is required.
Ed Morrisey of Captain’s Quarters bemoans: “As If 2008 Wasn’t Going To Be Tough Enough.” And Rick Moran of Right Wing Nut House screams: “JESUS, LORD! ARE THEY ALL HYPOCRITICAL BASTARDS?”
Kind of looks like they are all hyprocritical bastards, Rick. Can’t say as I blame some of you right wingers for feeling just a wee bit dis-enchanted with the party of the Grand Old Perverts. John Cole on Balloon Juice asks:
Why is everyone soliciting sex in bathrooms, for chrissakes? Is there some underground bathroom/gay sex culture out there? And if you have ever been to a public bathroom in WV (especially the ones in out of the way gas stations), sex is the last damned thing on your mind. A hot shower with bleach is what I am thinking about when I use a public bathrom- not hot gay sex.
Joe Gandelman of the Moderate Voice has a good run down of the buzz around both sides of the blogosphere; the wingnuts are truly “dismayed.” And in a post titled “The Arrest Room,” The News Hole asks: “What is it with these public servants and public restrooms!”
Kudos to Roll Call for topping what should have been the biggest story of the day: Gonzo’s resignation.
