The Mittster’s Makeover
by Pamela LeaveyAfter all the heat that John Edwards took for his expensive haircuts, there is nary a word said in the news or the blogosphere today about Mitt Romney’s $300 makeover. Kenneth P. Vogel reported today on Politico that the Mittster paid “to a California company that describes itself as “a mobile beauty team for hair, makeup and men’s grooming and spa services.”"
Romney spokesman Kevin Madden confirmed that the payments — actually two separate $150 charges — were for makeup, though he said the former Massachusetts governor had only one session with Hidden Beauty of West Hills, Calif. That was before the May 3 Republican presidential debate at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif., co-sponsored by MSNBC and The Politico.
“We used them once but booked time twice and still had to render payment for the appointment time,” said Madden, who said the disbursement was listed as “communications consulting” because it was paid from the communications division’s budget.
Vogel notes that “Romney’s makeup payment is just one example of the interesting nuggets that await those willing to dig through the thousands of entries in campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.” Evidently he was willing to dig.
On MYDD, Jonathan Singer notes, “I’m not going to hold my breath until the media oversaturates this story to the point where close to a majority of Americans can identify Romney as the candidate vain enough to plunk down $300 for a makeover, as they have done with John Edwards and his haircut.” I won’t be holding mine either because as Jonathan points out, “the media is willing to hold Democrats and Republicans to different standards on the issue of campaign expenditures on a candidate’s image.”
