For This Proud Mother… Life Goes On Beyond the Blogosphere

by Pamela Leavey

Last week I noted here that I would be blogging less for until the end of the month as my daughter is turning 18 and graduating from high school. We’ve got a lot going on with school events and family and friends, but this week there’s a lull in the excitement, so I’ve been able to get some posting done now that Prom and Awards Night, which were last week, are over. Whew!

I have to say, last Thursday night at Awards Night, I was so incredibly proud of my daughter, Juliet, who will be graduating with High Honors and a Presidential Academic Excellence Gold Award. As an only parent, it’s been tough over the years to balance both my business, which I started so I could be a stay-at-home mom and the blogging. But, the results of working at home, to be available for my daughter, are worth their weight in “gold.” I could not have been prouder of her the other night when she received her awards and a scholarship for college from her high school.

But, I did have one little beef about the Presidential Award — I think it was signed by the wrong man. Both Juliet and I mused how much more special it would have been had it been signed by John Kerry.

Juliet has been incredibly supportive of my work here in the blogosphere, and before that with the Kerry campaign. She came with me to nearly every Kerry campaign event in ’03 and ’04 and I always marveled privately to myself that Kerry would ask about her when she wasn’t with me in the years since.

I hope that Juliet will follow in my footsteps as an activist who seeks to make a difference in the world. I think she’s on the right track as she plans to major in anthropology at UC Santa Cruz and has taken an interest in Native American Studies. I know that she shares many of my concerns about the future of our country and she looks forward to voting for the first time in the ’08 election.

Back in March, Juliet had an assignment in her government class to write a politician about an issue and try to get a response. She wrote a letter to John Kerry about a bill sponsored by Senator Jack Reed: S.911. I have to admit, it helped to have a mother with connections… The personalized letter responding to Juliet from John Kerry made a big impression on her classmates and her teacher.

Days after receiving the letter from John Kerry, she and I then had the opportunity to sit with Kerry in the Green Room for a taping of the Tavis Smiley Show, and Juliet discussed her plans for college with the Senator and why she thought she would vote for Obama, with Kerry out of the race. After the Smiley Show taping we went to book event for the Kerry’s book, This Moment On Earth, where the photo below of my daughter and Senator Kerry was taken. Yes, I am a proud mother.

Next week is the big week, as Juliet turns 18 on the 27th and graduates the next day. We’ll be culminating it all with a big party with family and friends on the 30th.

I hope my readers and friends here will bear with me while life goes on and this proud mother skips in and out of the blogosphere for another week or two. Again, I want to thank Michaeldvg and SteveAudio for doing some guest blogging in my stead and as always my thanks to the whole crew here and our readers, who all help make The Dem Daily tick.

Life goes on beyond the blogosphere and it’s good to step back every now and then and appreciate your family and friends. My daughter has been my driving force and biggest inspiration in my life. I’m so proud that she will be going off to college this fall and yet as an only parent, I know I will miss her smiling face and laughter here at home. For now I will cherish the summer months with her and probably continue blog at little less whenever I can…

  1. Pamela,

{{{HUGS}}} Wish they could be in person. I am so happy for you and Juliet. Thanks for sharing – we all need to focus more on what is right in our lives.

  2. Congratulations to you both! Job well done! I can totally relate. : ) And wow- Juliet is not only smart, but gorgeous!

too bad she’s got the wrong signature on her well-deserved award. Sigh. . . I have Ronald Reagan’s signature on my college diploma; we all rolled our eyes. . .

  3. mbk,

Juliet takes after her Mom in a number of ways 😉 A very good thing. She also has taken what her mom has given and RUN with it. This success is solid foundation for building a bright future.

My sympathies to those of you with the signatures that roll your eyes! Oh well, a small fly…

  4. Pamela,

Your daughter is as beautiful as you and she is as smart( maybe smarter) then you. Great job and you should be very proud you both have done a super job!

  5. I feel like Juliet is my lil sister since Pamela is my proud blogger mom. I am so proud of you Juliet! Your mom has done such a great job of it. If you need to get some info on Native American studies, let me know. I can hook you up with some people from the United Houmas Nation. It is a group of Native Americans that are recognized by the state, and still fight to be recognized by the federal government.

I can try to get some pics of the mounds we have here. I am happy to help in any way I can.

  6. If I didn’t have a girlfriend already, I’d send you an e-mail to hook me up with your daughter Pamela…

Yes I’m 22 years old. No, I don’t have manners.

    Anyway – enjoy the time!

  7. Oh no, you leave my lil sister alone! Run Juliet, run! Your Marine Brother has your back. You leave my lil sister alone! 😆
