John Kerry on the Pentagon Decision To Replace General Pace
by Pamela LeaveyOut with the old.. In with the new… Once again the Bush Administration is pulling the switcheroo to avoid the obvious.
Gen. Peter Pace is being replaced as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a move that reflects a feeling among top civilian officials at the Pentagon and in the White House that the American military needs new leadership after years of being strained by the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
General Pace is to be succeeded by Adm. Michael G. Mullen, who has been chief of naval operations since the summer of 2005, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates announced today.
Mr. Gates said that re-nominating General Pace would be an intolerable “divisive ordeal” for the military and the general himself.
John Kerry today issued the following statement on the announcement that Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will be replaced rather than reappointed. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said this afternoon that he would recommend Adm. Mike Mullen to replace Pace.
“It is a sad state of affairs when this Administration withdraws a general they believe is qualified simply to avoid having to publicly defend their failed Iraq policy,” Senator Kerry said. “Congress has an obligation to ask tough questions about Iraq, and the architects of this war have an obligation to answer them openly and honestly. We will continue to hold this Administration accountable on Iraq. The next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff must tell Congress and the American people the truth about this war.”

It’s not clear to me why confirmation for Pace would be more divisive than for Mullen.
First, Congress demands all of the relevant source documents from the pertinent time.
Then Mullen gets asked “If a situation like this, this, and this comes up again what will you do”? Or “how will you face the effort by this adminsitration to order military action against Iran”? These guys either have to follow orders, or resign their Commands. There really isn’t alot of middle ground.
Or maybe I’m missing something.
