Note to Bush: 76% Say Iraq War Going Badly

by Pamela Leavey

As Congress prepares to capitualte to the whims of our maniacal leader, the Commander Guy, a new CBS POll shows that “the number of Americans who say the war is going badly has reached a new high, rising 10 percent this month to 76 percent.”

Nearly half of all Americans (47 percent) say the war is going very badly, while just 20 percent say the recent U.S. troop increase is making a positive difference.

Even more astounding is the fact that now, “a majority of Republicans, 52 percent, now say the war is going at least somewhat badly – a 16-point increase from the middle of April.”

Nine in 10 Democrats and eight in 10 Independents agree.

The N.Y. Times has more on the poll here. The Times also reports that, “in recounting the leadership’s thinking, senior Democrats and other officials said that by early this week they had concluded there was no alternative but to give ground to President Bush despite their view that he had mishandled the war and needed to be put under tighter Congressional rein.”

Democrats said they did not relish the prospect of leaving Washington for a Memorial Day break — the second recess since the financing fight began — and leaving themselves vulnerable to White House attacks that they were again on vacation while the troops were wanting. That criticism seemed more politically threatening to them than the anger Democrats knew they would draw from the left by bowing to Mr. Bush.

It is a mess no matter how we look at it. John Kerry, who will vote “NO” on the legislation, chimes in, in a blog post to the netroots, saying:

I’m not going to ask for patience, because the truth is big policy changes like this are only achieved by impatient people – in huge numbers. I’m just telling you, I’ll continue to work every single day (every damn day as my old friend Ron says) to apply pressure to change this broken policy. There will be new avenues of attack, new paths to take. But, for right now, it’s up to folks like me to do our part to keep the battle going, so all of you can work to keep the pressure going. Together, we can win this, as long as we keep the battle joined. Keep punching.

Kerry is mad as hell — we all are. Keep the pressure on. Speak out. Call your local Reps and Senators. We will bring an end to this War based on Lies. It’s just not going to happen overnight.

Keep the faith.
