Harry Reid is Proving He’s the New Sheriff in Town

by Pamela Leavey

Good for Harry Reid… Two can play at Bush’s game and this summer Bush may lose:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has a little trick up his sleeve that could spell an end to President Bush’s devilish recess appointments of controversial figures like former United Nations Ambassador John Bolton. We hear that over the long August vacation, when those types of summer hires are made, Reid will call the Senate into session just long enough to force the prez to send his nominees who need confirmation to the chamber. The talk is he will hold a quickie “pro forma” session every 10 days, tapping a local senator to run the hall. Senate workers and Republicans are miffed, but Reid is proving that he’s the new sheriff in town.

I think we’ve all seen enough of what happens with Bush’s special appointee’s to give Harry Reid a hearty “go for it.” Let the Republican Senators grumble, their goose is cooked with Bush’s lame duck presidency.

  3. I was watching Pelosi yesterday and my first reaction was “man, is she a slimy politician”. My second reaction was that I’m glad she’s at least our slimy politician.

My main reservation stems from the fact that I can’t tell whether she actually has no grand strategy, or just not one that she would care to share with the humble voters. And I’m really feeling very much the same about Reid.

I suppose that the easy answer is that they don’t want to tip their hand too much to the other side. But the counter to that is that that quintessentially is “politics as usual”. With the public as restive as it now is, I’m afraid that we’re either going to need to have some very clear victories to keep them from descending into cynicism, or we’ll have to find some far better than normal way to highlight the intransigence of the Republicans.

Maybe we can just get Mitch McConnell to get on T.V. more often. He was on yesterday also, and his nastiness was flat out repulsive.
