Kerry ‘08?

by Pamela Leavey

Is John Kerry reconsidering a White House run in ‘08? It seems that’s what 9News in Colorado construed from his comments at “book signing in Denver and then again, in an interview with 9NEWS.”

The 2004 Democratic nominee told a crowd of more than 250 at the Tattered Cover bookstore in lower downtown Denver that he had no desire to endorse any candidate for the office right now, choosing to wait to see how they addressed the issue of global warming.

Kerry and his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, are finishing up a nationwide tour to promote their book, “This Moment on Earth,” which highlights successful efforts at the local level to better the environment.

Afterwards, while answering a question from a viewer on the program YOUR SHOW about why he chose not to run, Kerry said he had decided it wasn’t the right time.

“Could that change?” Kerry said. “It might. It may change over years. It may change over months. I can’t tell you, but I’ve said very clearly I don’t consider myself out of it forever.”

9News reports, “When asked whether he expected that decision to change in time for the 2008 race, Kerry said, “If suddenly the field changed or the dynamics of the nation shifted, who knows? You might look at it differently, but I don’t see that. I don’t foresee that. That’s not where I am today and that’s not what I’m doing.”"

It’s no small secret I’d love to see Kerry jump back in. I told him that last week when he was here in L.A.. As much as I’d love to see it, I can only say he was a vague with me as he was with the reporter from 9news.

The feel I get whenever I hear him talk about endorsing anyone for ‘08, which is what led to this news story, is that Kerry doesn’t feel at this point that any of the Democratic candidates have a grasp on the issues that he would like to see. I agree, as I mentioned below. Will he change his mind and jump in? There’s still plenty of time. And, I have a sense, contrary to what some bloggers would like to float, that there are plenty of people who still love to see him run. I think however, that Kerry is pretty darn clear on his reasons not to run… but as he himself said, “Who knows?”

But, for now, Kerry is out there in the forefront pushing the issues that matter to him — the Iraq War and the environment, to name two of the many. He has built up a phenomenal platform, one I hear echoed here and there from the various candidates in the field, but so far none has quite the grasp on the issues that matter, like Kerry does.

He gave it a great shot in ‘04, coming close, damn close, while up against a war time incumbant. Some liberal bloggers could save their cheap shots for the do nothing members of the Democratic Party. John Kerry isn’t one of those and we’d be a far sight better off in this country with a man like Kerry in the White House. He towers over the rest of the candidates in my opinion. If he makes that choice, I’m there all the way. It goes with out saying, but, I’ve said it anyway.

    Are democrats serious about Kerry?

Just how sane are democrats?  Pamela Leavey, Democratic Daily, discusses John Kerry’s hnts of running in Aught Eight.   First, this is wher [...]

  2. Excellent, Pamela. As another who would love absolutely LOVE to see Senator Kerry run again, I completely agree. But I do trust his instincts and judgment on this. He will do what’s right for the country and for his family.

But one can always hope ! :7

  3. A fine post, Pamela. I’ve noticed lately that Senator Kerry has been received by many in the blogosphere as now having genuine statesman qualities that they seemed blind to before. In fact, recently both dkos (never Kerry’s avid supporters) and Huffpo (extremely vitriolic posters against Kerry in the past) now showing people giving Kerry a second look, liking what they see, and wishing they had seen it before the last election took place. Slowly but surely, our good Senator is opening peoples’ eyes to who he is and what he was trying to say amid all the republican and MSM distortion. I sense a glimmer of hope still about his one day being our president, and I know you do too. But I too trust his judgment about his future, as both you and Yvonne do.

  4. While it’s good that he is keeping his options open, the bad is that it’s brought out the chronic Kerry bashers/haters still bitter over 2004 primaries and general election.

I don’t have a candidate either, but I would have for the good senator’s words to be used against him, even in MA. The flip-flop charge hurt him in the GE in 04.

    Trust his judgement also.

    Peace!

  5. Oops, meant to say “hate” not “have”

  6. I’ve been as die hard a Kerry supporter as the next person. But his performance with Gingrich last week showed he needs to hone his presentation skills. He knows more than the others, but presentation is key.
Plus persuading the big bundlers and grassroots supporters donate to be competitive at this point will be a long shot.

  8. I don’t know alrudder, I watched most of that debate between JK and Gingrich. I pretty much thought JK handed him his ass. JK got Gingrich to admit that Global Warming is a problem and that government will be part of the answer. (The question really came down to how will government be used.)

    Winner – Kerry

Keep us posted on your progress. I mentioned your website to JK when I saw him here in LA on the 4th.

  10. Well god knows I’d love to see JK run in 08. Frankly this country can’t afford to have any of the one’s running now in the whitehouse.

I figured the blogs were really going after him so I didn’t read and of the post about it but this one.

Heck, Money is important but if hill or edwards or obama makes a stumble or to then who knows.

I think some of his money supporters are holding out as there was an artilc out a while back that some not all went to Obama’s camp.

None of the candidates running has a clear understanding or ideas to stem the flow of global warming. And it about time somebody realize that global warming is a national security risk. Thanks generals.

I do think JK is going to have to let go of Iraq a bit. just my opinion but Iraq is very important but so are other areas of the world especially Afganistan.

I talked to a friend last week and she said it was a shame Gore and Kerry weren’t running or on the same ticket.

a couple of other people I talked to basically said the same thing its a shame Kerry and Gore aren’t running.

When people ask me who am I rooting for I tell the nobody because the only 2 I’d vote for aren’t running.

There is still alot of antipathy about voting and if it matters. There are still people out there who won’t vote for hillary and aren’t sure about the others.

There are people out there who want a grown up in the whitehouse and JK fits the bill.

He won’t change his mind but if there is the slightest chance he may I say Run kerry run.
