Are 12,000 More Guard Troops Going to Iraq?

by Pamela Leavey

This is nuts… We need to be bringing them home, not sending more!

Coming on the heels of a controversial “surge” of 21,000 U.S. troops that has stretched the Army thin, the Defense Department is preparing to send an additional 12,000 National Guard combat forces to Iraq and Afghanistan, defense officials told NBC News on Thursday.

The troops will come from four Guard combat brigades in different states, the officials told NBC News’ chief Pentagon correspondent, Jim Miklaszewski. They said papers ordering the deployment, which would run for one year beginning in early 2008, were awaiting Defense Secretary Robert Gates’ signature.

Jim Miklaszewski, Chief Pentagon correspondent for NBC predicts, “The deployment is sure to ignite a firestorm on Capitol Hill, where Democrats in Congress are maneuvering to scale back the U.S. commitment in Iraq.”

Get ready for things to heat up on the Hill next week as Congress reconvenes after Easter break and Bush prepares to show his disdain for the troops by vetoing the Iraq spending bill.

Donnie said it earlier here, “this has to end now.”

  1. Idiots, the whole lot of them! This has to stop now!

  2. What do those gonzos need so many vacations for? If the Congressional Democratic leadership had a lick of sense, there would be no more recesses for the rest of this term, and no more recess appointments. I know I’ve never had a week off for Easter unless I wanted to take my regular vacation then. They need to just stay in session, and go when they need to go, and come back when they’re done.

If they were there, they could begin fighting this thing today. On the other hand, I don’t see that much fight in anybody but Bush. The war on Congress and the American people is in full swing, and The Whitehouse is winning.

  3. why early 2008???? could it be to help the election for republicans by making iraq look better????? these people need to be tried for crimes even after they leave office. fox news should be tried with them as accomplices.

  4. As I said before, “Bring Back the Draft!” Maybe then some of these well healed Republicans would change their tune if their kids were threatened with the reality of going to war!

  5. Lets hear it for our volunteer army!
