John and Elizabeth Edwards to Hold Press Conference at Noon

by Pamela Leavey

John and Elizabeth Edwards will be holding a press conference today at noon. The Edwards camp isn’t talking anything more than has circulated through the late night news, but something is amiss and the speculation is that has to do with Elizabeth Edwards health.

Advisers declined to discuss the details of the hastily arranged announcement ahead of time. “He’s talking tomorrow,” said Jonathan Prince, Edwards’s deputy campaign manager, last night. “Listen to what he says tomorrow.”

The appearance comes on the heels of a last-minute decision by Edwards this week to cancel an event in Iowa to accompany his wife to a doctor’s appointment on Wednesday. Elizabeth Edwards was diagnosed with breast cancer at the end of her husband’s unsuccessful 2004 campaign as the Democratic vice presidential nominee. She subsequently underwent extensive treatment.

Her husband has repeatedly said he would put his wife’s well-being first; he announced that he would mount a second bid for the presidency after she was given a clean bill of health.

After a doctor’s appointment Monday, Elizabeth Edwards, 57, was summoned for further tests.

Advisors to Edwards’s reportedly “declined to discuss his wife’s health, saying she would speak for herself on Thursday,” however they “did not play down the seriousness of the announcement.”

I don’t think the tone of what has come out so far from the Edwards camp, bodes well at all. The N.Y. Times reports:

Mrs. Edwards, in a brief interview from her home in Chapel Hill, said she and Mr. Edwards would discuss her health at the news conference, but she declined to elaborate.

ā€œI’m still here,ā€ she said.

Jennifer Palmieri, communications director for the Edwards campaign, said that she would not provide any details in advance of the press conference, which will be held in Chapel Hill, N.C.

We’ll know more at noon, until then, thoughts and prayers go out to Elizabeth Edwards and the Edwards camp…

IN THE BLOGOSPHERE:

  • Jeralyn on TalkLeft is hoping for the best — “I am so hoping that Edwards will announce Elizabeth is fine and there is no reason to believe she faces a recurrence.”
  • John on AmericaBlog says, “I hate to speculate, but this is very strange and on its face doesn’t look good.”
  • Kate Phillips has more on the N.Y. Times blog The Caucus, that also doesn’t seem to bode well and ends with a contradictory: “We were told not to assume the worst.”
