A Magical, Musical Experience: Loreena McKennitt’s Nights from the Alhambra on PBS

by Pamela Leavey

I took the weekend off from the Dem Daily, as many of readers may have noticed, to take some time to re-focus and catch up on business and personal stuff. This evening, I settled in with my daughter to watch what I can only describe as a magical, musical experience: Loreena McKennitt’s Nights from the Alhambra.

I’m intensely proud of my Celtic heritage and since I was very young, I have loved Irish and Celtic music. A few years ago, I discovered Loreena McKennitt whose “eclectic Celtic” music transcends the boundaries of time and borders. McKennitt is currently touring in Europe and the U.S. and last September she performed at the “Alhambra Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Granada, Spain.” It was an amazing performance. I highly recommend to our readers to take a night and watch it this month. If you are familiar with her music the performance included a meld of her classics as well as songs from her new CD: An Ancient Muse. If you’re not familiar with her music, check out the PBS special and the video below.

PBS’s Great Performances will be featuring Loreena McKennitt’s Nights from the Alhambra throughout the month of March. The complete schedule is available here. Here’s a clip of the show from You Tube featuring Caravanserai from An Ancient Muse (you can also view the stream via her website):

Seems to me that you might want to learn more about your Celtic roots too! :)

  5. McDaniel is an adopted name. I am actually pure French. My research shows generations of Acadians. Many of my people came here on the 7 ships that brought the first Acadins over at the expense of the then Spanish Gov. No wonder I don’t like Bill O’Reilly huh?

I forgot that you told me that before. It’s okay you still need to watch it!

Her latest CD is wonderful. I heard the other night that the 2nd release has 3 songs from the Alhambra show that were not on the 1st release that I bought in December. My daughter and I are going to her show here in L.A. in May.

  10. Was the Greek Theatre Damaged by the Fire?

While we’re unaware of any specific damage to the Greek Theatre, we’re certain it’s littered with ash and smells-like-burning. So is Nederlander, the production company that books shows at the Greek. Tomorrow night’s Loreena McKennitt concert has …
