Kerry On: Set A Deadline to End the War in Iraq

by Pamela Leavey

The news that John Kerry has decided not to run in ‘08 for president has been a shock and a source of sadness to many of our readers. Kerry partisan’s that we all have been, the Dem Daily has been a haven for Kerry supporters as well as a respected source for Kerry news in the blogopshere since we first started here on the blogosphere in July ‘05.

I want to thank our readers for the thoughts expressed in the threads here about John’s decision and assure everyone that the Dem Daily will continue on.

We’ve got work to do, as Kerry has said in his email announcing his decision yesterday and on the blog at JohnKerry.com. If you haven’t watched the video there yet, please do, because the bottomline is that John Kerry will continue on with his work to get the troops home from Iraq and. And, as we as a community move forward as activists on the blogosphere, I feel that supporting Kerry’s initiative will be an important part of our mission.

Yesterday as Kerry made his announcement on the Senate floor, “the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved a nonbinding resolution expressing disapproval of a surge of additional U.S. troops in Iraq. Sen. Chuck Hagel (Neb.), a potential presidential candidate, was the only Republican who voted in favor of the resolution.”

We must do more however, than a non-binding resolution. Kerry’s position within the Senate Foreign Relations Committee as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Near Eastern and South and Central Asian Affairs, gives him perhaps a little more leverage as he, “seeks “co-sponsors” to legislation he plans to introduce aimed at forcing Bush to set a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.”

The new proposal “mirrors one Kerry offered last April that would have required all U.S. forces be out of Iraq by the end of 2006.” That proposal was defeated 83 to 16 in a Senate vote in June, but we all know that the news and opinions on Iraq have changed drastically since then. We can add our voices of support to this cause and we can work here on the Dem Daily to support it.

Please visit SetADeadline.com and support John Kerry’s mission to bring our troops home from Iraq.
