The Deed is Done… Saddam’s Been Hung

by Pamela Leavey

So the dirty deed has been done, it’s not been done dirt cheap. Saddam Hussein has been executed and NBC News reported that “gunfire, presumably celebratory, could be heard in Baghdad after the executions.”

Three years after he was hauled from a hole in the ground by pursuing U.S. forces, Saddam Hussein was hanged Saturday under a sentence imposed by an Iraqi court, an Iraqi official told NBC News.

The deposed president was found guilty over the killing of 148 members of the Shiite population of the town of Dujail after militants tried to assassinate him there in 1982, during Iraq’s war with Shiite Iran.

Asked if Saddam were dead, the official in the Iraqi prime minister’s office said, “Yes, the body of Saddam Hussein is in front of me.”

My guess is they were popping some corks in Crawford, TX tonight too… But, one can’t help but look back and reflect on the “grim end for the 69-year-old leader who had vexed three U.S. presidents,” that “only cost $354 billion (and counting) and the lives of 3,000 very expendable US military to enable the President to demonstrate to his dad that he has a bigger Dick. Or is one…”

Isn’t it ironic – don’tcha think? Saddam hung so that Dubya can prove that he’s BETTER hung…

On Brad Blog, Brad reports:

The deed is done. Good luck washing all of that blood off your hands, Mr. Bush. Only you could turn a despicable man like Hussein into a martyr. By years end, in a few hours, the 3000 mark may be passed for dead U.S. troops in your war. You’ve had quite the reign, sir.

And on Gun Toting Liberal, Alexander Paul Melonas says: Mr. Bush Awaits Enlightenment While More U.S. Blood Is Spilled.

Senator Ted Kennedy issued the following statement tonight:

“Saddam Hussein was a brutal tyrant and murderous dictator. Now it is time for the people of Iraq to work to reconcile their differences and to heal the wounds of the past. Only that process will end the violence that has prevented Iraq from moving forward.”

The N.Y. Times headline on the execution reads: “Dictator Who Ruled Iraq With Violence Is Hanged for Crimes Against Humanity,” and they include an interactive feature on the life of Saddam here. Glory to the dictator… he’s now dead…

Saddam Hussein was hanged until death ensued. A black page in the history of Iraq has been turned,” it added in a second news flash, as joyful popular music filled the airwaves.

  1. I never thought that in 2006 we would actually be on a hanging watch. I spent the whole day waiting for a hanging. This once and for all proves to me he did not have weapons of mass destructions. HE WOULD HAVE USED THEM. Why would someone let themselves lose everthing including their life if they had weopons that could have stopped it all.

I hear you on counts. It’s bizarre, but hey the blogosphere is lit up and there’s some interesting conversations. Especially from the wingnuts.

  3. Lit up indeed.

I just never can seem to get used to how much the wingnuts love violence and savagery.
Not to mention how particulary vicious they can be in their own right.
My blog post has already been linked on several of their sites…or should I say targeted for assassination? It truly is revolting.

    Peace y’all

I’ve been reading the wingnuts posts and they truly are revolting. And yes they can be very vicious – overkill on most things they are against. They are a sad statement on humanity.

  5. overkill…yeah, good word.

    In wingnut land…
I am an idiot that would rather die than kill the offending bacteria.

The connection is nothing short of psychotic.

Thanks for the links to some good posts.

    Peace.

  6. Juan Cole and Riverbend had some interesting educated insights on Saddam’s excution.

Both are very good at explaining the ethnic and political realities of Iraq. Riverbend had been absent since 5 Nov and many feared she had become a victim of the conflict.

  8. ‘Isn’t it ironic – don’tcha think? Saddam hung so that Dubya can prove that he’s BETTER hung…’

That is not ironic. Ironic is where the literal meaning and actual meanings are opposite. This is a word play on a metaphore. You might say instead, ‘isn’t it funny?’

Also where you hang a person by his neck, the past tense is ‘hanged’ not ‘hung’ i.e.:

    ‘I hung a painting’
    ‘I hanged Saddam’
