A New Blogger on the Sphere (Sort Of): Tom DeLay

by Pamela Leavey

There’s a new blog on the blogosphere that is swiftly drawing the attention of blogs left and right. The blogger is none other than ex-House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX), the same ex-House Majority Leader who was criminally indicted and stepped down in disgrace. It’s a stretch for DeLay, who Think Progress reports, said last year that he ‘found the fact that Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy “does his own research on the Internet” to be “just incredibly outrageous.”’ Perhaps Delay thinks his career might have turned out differently in Congress if he had a blog because now he says that he wants to “be a role model that leaders ought to have their own blog.”

It gets better… DeLay is not actually blogging himself, he acknowledged: “I have the ideas, and I have somebody else put the words together.”

Today, Tom “The Hammer” DeLay or his ghostwriter took aim at one of the most famed liberal bloggers, Arianna Huffington and he predicted that Hillary Clinton will be our next president at a The Heritage Foundation & Human Events co-sponsored bloggers briefing that he followed up with on his blog.

DeLay told the group that he has created the “Grassroots Action and Information Network after observing the success of liberal organizations such as MoveOn.org, the Media Fund and Americans Coming Together.” Strangely, DeLay thinks that the liberal [blog] coalition, “working in concert with the news media” will “propel Clinton to the White House in 2008.” My question to DeLay is what blogs is he reading? So far the support for Hillary in the blogosphere seems weak at best. The consensus I hear is no Hillary and no Obama.

Regardless the right wing bloggers will fawn all over DeLay and praise him to the high heavens. I wonder if he’s convicted, if he’ll blog from the cell?

  1. Despite the hypocrisy of it, I’m all in favor of Tom DeLay blogging instead of trying to govern. I am much more comfortable knowing he’ll only be chiming in with his “opinion” on issues via blogging rather than MAKING LAW based upon his opinions!

  2. “The consensus I hear is no Hillary and no Obama.”

Well, it should be noted that consesnsus from the blogging left at the mid-term elections didn’t really reflect what ended up happening. The first largely blog inspired campaign not just lost, but backfired entirely, and Lieberman retained his seat. . .only as an independent instead of a Democrat.

So it remains to be seen if ‘blog consensus really has any relation to the desires of democratic party voters as a whole.

  3. The blog campaign did not backfire entirely. It failed due to the general election voters choosing to retain their senator.

The tepid support for Hillary and Obama at the grass roots can make a bigger difference in ‘08 than ever before. Dean showed what a good web based grassroots campaign can do in 2000 – beyond mere financial support. As Dan Gilmor points out, the combination of a really good web campaign and a candidate that will appeal to folks still using the MSM to get information is going to determine ‘08. A good web campaign would, by defintion, be a bottom up exchange with the campaign – not continuing the historical top down, beltway centered campaigns to connect with the voters.

I agree with Javelin. Much better for Delay to be blogging than governing.

  4. OOps, Dean’s campaign was 04.
