Frist Steps In It

by Pamela Leavey

Senate majority Leader Bill Frist seems to have stepped in it, big time today and his comments (or reported comments) made in Afghanistan are leaving Republicans wondering WTF. So much for the Republicans being tough on National Security. I don’t think Frist can worm out of this, the damage has been done in the eyes of many a right wingnut, although he claims his comments were taken out of context. Oh, and Frist wasn’t speaking to the press alone about this, his sidekick Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida also stepped in it with him…

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said Monday that the Afghan guerrilla war can never be won militarily and called for efforts to bring the Taliban and their supporters into the Afghan government.

The Tennessee Republican said he had learned from briefings that Taliban fighters were too numerous and had too much popular support to be defeated by military means.

“You need to bring them into a more transparent type of government,” Frist said during a brief visit to a U.S. and Romanian military base in the southern Taliban stronghold of Qalat. “And if that’s accomplished we’ll be successful.”

Frist said asking the Taliban to join the government was a decision to be made by Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Sen. Mel Martinez, a Republican from Florida accompanying Frist, said negotiating with the Taliban was not “out of the question” but that fighters who refused to join the political process would have to be defeated.

“A political solution is how it’s all going to be solved,” he said.

Frist said what? If you find Frist’s comments a little mind-boggling join the club. Bloggers on both sides of the aisle are having a field day with this.

Over on DKos, Geekesque says, “Bill Frist has just put the final stake in the heart of they myth of Republican toughness on national security.”

Sadly, it bears repeating: Taliban = Al Qaeda. They are joined economically, ideologically, and operationally at the hip.

Bob Fertik on Democrats.com notes: Bill Frist Is Now an Enemy Combatant.

Now let’s get this straight: “the Taliban and their supporters” are the very people who attacked us on 9/11 and started Bush’s “War on Terror” – Mullah Omar, Osama Bin Laden, Ayman Al Zwahiri, and the rest of Al Qaeda.

Moonbattery claims: “Bill Frist Redefines Victory,” and Dan on Riehl World says about Frist’s claim that his comments were taken out of context: “Now Frist Is Being Disingenuous.”

And on The Heretik: Reality Check — Maybe Senator Doctor Frist can claim somebody doctored his meds.

  3. Unbelieveable……..no, I mean REALLY unbelieveable! Can you imagine what the White House (read : Rove and Cheney) would be saying right now if Frist were a Dem?

  7. It was deeply misguided for Majority Leader Senator Frist to suggest that we should let this terrorist group and their supporters join the Afghanistan government. We need to fight the Taliban and destroy them; that is our mission in Afghanistan. The Taliban are terrorists and the US government should not be in the business of negotiating with the same terrorists who supported those who masterminded 9-11 and who still continue to support bin Laden and his murderous ideology. As Senator Kerry has advocated, if we want to win the war on terror we must send troops to Afghanistan and fight terrorists who are right now targeting US troops with IEDs and suicide bombers. Senator Frist should not encourage President Karzai to engage with these terrorists if in fact that is what he was suggesting. He should encourage the Afghan president to continue to fight and destroy the Taliban and those who support al Qaeda. The resurgence of the Taliban can and must be solved only militarily. This issue cannot be resolved politically.

  8. Excellent points made by Probus. You said it better than I could have!

When Sen. Frist goes to places like Afghanistan which where he went with Sen. Mel Martinez, he should very careful about what information he puts out there. He is a high-ranking member, he should be very aware of the message he gives out.

He’s in charge of the Legislative Agenda of the Senate, so he should watch what he says. I am deeply disappointed in him.

  9. Kerry Criticizes Frist’s Taliban Comments

John Kerry was in the stump in NH talking about Bill Frist and “The Retreatican Party” on Wednesday. AP News reports, “Democratic Sen. John Kerry ridiculed Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist for trying to clarify his comment on bringi…
