About that Terror Plot

by Pamela Leavey

NBC reports that they have “learned that U.S. and British authorities had a significant disagreement over when to move in on the suspects in the alleged plot to bring down trans-Atlantic airliners bound for the United States.” It could be all meaningless, but with an administration known to politicize terrorism for they own gain, this story deserves a closer look…

A senior British official knowledgeable about the case said British police were planning to continue to run surveillance for at least another week to try to obtain more evidence, while American officials pressured them to arrest the suspects sooner. The official spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the case.

In contrast to previous reports, the official suggested an attack was not imminent, saying the suspects had not yet purchased any airline tickets. In fact, some did not even have passports.

The source did say, however, that police believe one U.K.-based suspect was ready to conduct a “dry run.” British authorities had wanted to let him go forward with part of the plan, but the Americans balked.

NBC notes a disagreement from the Bush cabal over this latest news tidbit uncovered by NBC. One official says there was a no disagreement between the U.S. and the U.K. and another says there was…

At the White House, a top aide to President Bush denied the account.

“There was unprecedented cooperation and coordination between the U.S., the U.K. and Pakistani officials throughout the case,” said Frances Townsend, Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, “and we worked together to protect our citizens from harm while ensuring that we gathered as much info as possible to bring the plotters to justice. There was no disagreement between U.S. and U.K. officials.”

Another U.S. official, however, acknowledges there was disagreement over timing. Analysts say that in recent years, American security officials have become edgier than the British in such cases because of missed opportunities leading up to 9/11.

The un-named British official also said that the U.S. also “argued over the timing of the arrest of suspected ringleader Rashid Rauf in Pakistan.” The warning from the U.S. was “that if he was not taken into custody immediately, the U.S. would “render” him or pressure the Pakistani government to arrest him.”

British security was concerned that Rauf be taken into custody “in circumstances where there was due process,” according to the official, so that he could be tried in British courts. Ultimately, this official says, Rauf was arrested over the objections of the British.

Topping off the story from NBC, was this tidbit on the “explosive mixture” which caused the airlines to ban all liquids from carry-on:

Monitoring of Rauf, in particular, apparently played a critical role, revealing that the plotters had tested the explosive liquid mixture they planned to use at a location outside Britain. NBC News has previously reported that the explosive mixture was tested in Pakistan. The source said the suspects in Britain had obtained at least some of the materials for the explosive but had not yet actually prepared or mixed it.

The NBC story certainly gels nicely with the report by AFP on Thursday — “Bush seeks political gains from foiled plot.” See my earlier post on that here.

  1. This brings to mind how many times folks gripe about the number of lawyers in office. Well here’s another W proof that some people don’t get good legal advice (Harriet may not be the only one misleading him). If they know nothing about the law, the momentary political gains and the short term voter memories supercede building a solid case.

Run that Spitzer ad on the simple rule.

  2. Same song, second verse.

  3. The generally accepted story is that these folks had tickets and were three days away from boarding and blowing things up with bottles of red sport drink with false bottoms?? So this is another damn lie?

  4. Janet,

I don’t know why you seem to end up in the mod que every time. Maybe Pamela can find out why. Well I have your back lady. So how is the news on the young fellow that got charged? Please let us know.

  5. Oh Donnie, click on my name and read the latest. My last blog post is about Bobby. It caught the attention of one of my local hometown columnists for our little local paper. He is going to write about Bobby for his next article to put a human face on this tragedy.

What is weird is that his parents and us did not agree politically–they had their Bush sign and me my Gore sign. But now they hold Bush and Rummy responsible for the fix their child is in.

  6. Janet

So sad. There’s no excuse for sending those boys back over and over again. Bush is responsible for this.

  7. Janet,

I posted on it. Calling in the troops for support.
