Washington Post, Enemy of Dissent?
by RonChusidThe Washington Post reports on a study of the effects of watching The Daily Show in a column entitled Jon Stewart, Enemy of Democracy?
This is not funny: Jon Stewart and his hit Comedy Central cable show may be poisoning democracy.
Two political scientists found that young people who watch Stewart’s faux news program, “The Daily Show,” develop cynical views about politics and politicians that could lead them to just say no to voting.
Is The Daily Show really so dangerous? To make sure I ran a search for more information, and found a different article which reports quite differently on the study:
How does cynicism affect “Daily Show” viewers’ political behaviors? Morris and Baumgartner aren’t sure. Alienation could drive the show’s watchers away from polls during election, they said. Discontent could also spawn greater involvement.
Another possibility: As “Daily Show” viewers grow more confident in political knowledge — a byproduct of “getting” Stewart’s humor — they could become more active voters, Baumgartner said.
“Participation breeds more participation and informed participation” he said. “So that by itself would be a net positive.”
Well, we have a definite maybe here. Looking at how The Washington Post takes such a one-sided view in reporting on the potential harm from the show, it really makes me wonder if The Washington Post has become an enemy of liberal dissent. How sad coming from the newspaper which did so much to expose Richard Nixon.

The greatest poison to democracy is Wapo, nyt, faux news, cnn, msnbc and all the other media whores who have rolled on their backs for bush, rove and the GOP.
More people read or watch them than the daily show.
The idea that The Daily Show is somehow a threat to democracy is utterly ridiculous. The biggest threat to democracy in the last seven years came not from a faux-news comedy show, but from Bush’s blatant thieving Gore’s rightful victory.
I can’t speak for everyone, but I watch The Daily Show (as well as The Colbert Report) almost every day… yet, I vote every chance I can get. It’s never once dissuaded me from voting. The MSM has a lot more to answer for than The Daily Show.
The “liberal” MSM strongly dislike the Daily Show and Colbert Report because they constantly and easily show how biased toward Bush and the GOP the MSM are. Along with how inept and what propaganda parrots the GOP and MSM are.
Lapdogs don’t like being shown they are lapdogs. Esp by easily displaying them all doing it constantly together on mass…
I’m just glad somebody is showing the msm for the cowards they really are.
