House Passes Bill to Protect Pets in Disasters

by RonChusid

Fudge

A bill has passed the House with bipartisan support to “require state and local preparedness offices to take into account pet owners, household pets and service animals when drawing up evacuation plans. Offices that fail to do so would not qualify for grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.” Similar legislation is being introduced in the Senate with bipartisan support.

Just as “natural enemies” in both parties united to support this, my dog and three cats all join together to support this act, being greatly disturbed by the television pictures of children having their pets taken away when rescued following Katrina.

  1. How cute! Yes my cat supports this too.

  2. My little Pomeranian “Misha” has been hoping for this to become a requirement when we were watching all those poor people during the Katrina fiasco trying to save their pets. Of course he doesn’t think it should pertain to the house cat “Cumi”….

  3. Blech!! Does this mean I have to take a Republican with me, when I evacuate this summer? ;) A cat or dog is one thing, but I don’t think I want a pet Thug for that long in my car. LOL

  4. Well Donnie, I think cats are to independent to be rethugs and dogs well although they have the pack mentality dogs are to kind hearted to be rethugs. Now if you pick up some pet rats or snakes then you run the risk of a rethug pet. :-)

In all seriousness its about time this thing past. I know first hand about being a kid and being forced to leave your pet when the evacuation order comes through. My dog was free to seek shelter and I was gone for about a day but it damn near killed me to abandon her on my folks orders.

I swore when I got older I’d never leave my pets to survive on their own no matter what the law or anybody else said.

Dogs and cats are our eyes and ears when we are sleep. Many kill vermin and watch over our family the least humans can do is help them get to safety when a disaster is heading our way.

  5. I asked my cat about it?
He told me to get lost..as usual.

  6. Battlebob- don’t take it personally. :-)
