Truthout Issues Partial Apology
by RonChusidTruthout has issued a comment on their story of last week that Karl Rove was indicted. Now if I could just figure out what this really means:
The Rove Indictment Story as of Right Now
On Saturday afternoon, May 13, 2006, TruthOut ran a story titled, “Karl Rove Indicted on Charges of Perjury, Lying to Investigators.” The story stated in part that top Bush aide Karl Rove had earlier that day been indicted on the charges set forth in the story’s title.
The time has now come, however, to issue a partial apology to our readership for this story. While we paid very careful attention to the sourcing on this story, we erred in getting too far out in front of the news-cycle. In moving as quickly as we did, we caused more confusion than clarity. And that was a disservice to our readership and we regret it.
As such, we will be taking the wait-and-see approach for the time being. We will keep you posted.

It means they got the story wrong and they know it. Problem is, they don’t have the integrity to admit it. Shame on them.

Shall we list all the things that BushCo has not had the integrity to come clean on?
Sorry, I don’t have that much time tonight – it would take weeks actually.
I feel violated! Again!
PunditGuy might be right. His interpretation is one of the interpretations I considered as likely when I read their comment–but it is not the only possible interpretation.
Whether or not we believe that Rove and other top people in the Bush administration deserve to be indicted is a totally different issue from whether Leopold got this particular story right.
Supposedly Truthout has an exclusive source which gave Leopold information no other reporters were given. Perhaps this information was accurate, and for reasons which are not yet clear they have delayed announcing the indictment. However, the longer we go without seeing an indictment, or getting specifics on exactly who said what to Leopold, the harder it is to believe that the story was correct.
As was the case when I first started commenting on this story, all we can do is wait and see how it plays out.
