Insight: Cheney to Retire After Midterm Elections

by RonChusid

I don’t know what to make of this prediction from Insight: Cheney seen retiring after midterm elections. Cheney’s latest poll numbers, as well as the possibliity he will be indicted in the Plame case, make this sound increasingly plausible. If Bush thinks this will help, maybe he should consider what happened after Nixon dumped Spiro Agnew.

  1. I think it is something possible, but the goal would not be to help Bush, but to position the person that the GOP wants to see as the 2008 nominee.

It is generally considered that the sitting VP of a popular president has an advantage against a total challenger and can benefit from the bully pulpit as well as the President.

However, I wonder if being Bush’s VP is that great an advantage.

  2. Being picked as VP would be a plus for the GOP nomination, but wouldn’t necessarily help in the general election. Under normal circumstances sitting VP’s have had trouble getting elected–such as with Nixon (who wasn’t elected until later), Humphrey, and Gore. Bush I did it, but had an extremely popular President before him.
