Bush Plans to Veto Legislation to Block Dubai Port Takeover

by Pamela Leavey

AP News is reporting that Bush called reporters into his conference room on Air Force One, after returning from a speech in Colorado to address the growing controversy that is”becoming a major headache for the White House.” There has been a ground swell of bipartisan outcry over this deal in the past week (see this post for links to our coverage).

He said the seaports arrangement was “a legitimate deal that will not jeopardize the security of the country.”

How can Bush be so sure? That’s the question that lawmakers and citizens are posing on this. The opposition by bipartisan lawmakers, has caused Bush to get a bit testy today and he claimed that he will veto any congressional effort to stop it – “I’ll deal with it with a veto.”

After careful review by our government, I believe the transaction ought to go forward,” Bush told reporters who had traveled with him on Air Force One to Washington. “I want those who are questioning it to step up and explain why all of a sudden a Middle Eastern company is held to a different standard than a Great British company. I am trying to conduct foreign policy now by saying to the people of the world, ‘We’ll treat you fairly.”’

Take a good long look at this Bush supporters, because in announcing that he will veto any legislation to block this deal, George W. Bush announced that the concerns of of lawmakers in this country and the concerns of Americans don’t mean jack to him.

UPDATE: New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine said today, N.J. will file lawsuits in state and federal courts opposing the agreement. Corzine cited a “deep, deep feeling that this is the wrong direction for our nation to take.”

  1. The entire reason these people are in power is for personal financial gain–this is what they believe the government is for–to enable deals and maximize profits.

It is sickening. What ever happened to the ideal of getting into politics as a matter of public service to our nation and its citizens?

    This to me is treason.

  2. Why don’t we just outsource the Presidency of the United States.

  3. Sandrakae

I dunno who do we get if we do that?

  4. Bush threatens a veto on the damndest issues: first anti-torture legislation, not this.

Slightly off-topic, but IMHO, Bush owes the Corporation for Public Broadcasting an apology. PBS is now the only source of news even listening to Bush’s side of the argument.

  5. Some quick questions for our President:

President Bush, you seem very concerned about insulting or “sending the wrong message” to our so-called friends who are “with us” in this war on terror. Do you have any CLUE how concerned and disturbed the people of your OWN country are right now? Please help us to understand why you would pick a foreign country to protect us than an American company. Do you not trust your own country to protect you?

You stated that once they are working on American soil, the DPA (Dubai Ports Authority) will be “ required mandatory participation in U.S. security programs to stop smuggling and detect illegal shipments”. Will this participation be managed by the same team successfully training the new Iraqi army or maybe outsourced to another country like Yemen?

Can we draw cartoons describing this situation because I’ve noticed that the DPA website has their own cartoon spokesperson by the name of Captain Hamad. Can we make fun of him without setting off riots with our new super cool friends in the United Arab Emirates.

Finally, the CIA.GOV website factbook page concerning the UAE really disturbs me. Is it true that a country with 96% Muslims is also having disputes with Iran. WOW, at least we have ONE thing in common with the UAE.

Oh yeah, one more thing. I AM NOT addicted to Oil. I need it to get to work to feed my family and pay TAXES. Stop insulting us.

    A concerned citizen.

  6. Sounds like a case of “Pre 9/11 thinking” to me.

Does shrub have the guts to use his veto pen? He hasn’t vetoed anything else in his so called presidency. My guess is that if anything does get out of Congress: a) He roles over (again) or b) He vetos the legislation, Congress overrides him and he’s officially a Lame Duck. Quack Shrub! Quack!

Cooked Goose I like to say. I wonder if Ginny will share her goose stuffing recipe…

  8. Pamela,

My stuffing recipe is one of the few things I do out of the bag. I do have a new mix I call Antioxidant Punch (for knocking out free radicals ;) that I really like….

About 2/3rd through “American Dynasty” by Kevin Phillips.
Talk about overwhelming. I knew some of this stuff, but not how long, how deep, deceptive, amoral, unethical and flat out criminal this clan has been. When Mike Malloy talks about The Bush Crime Family, it’s an understatement. We have to get the House & Senate in November and impeach this sorry excuse for a human being ASAP. Money and power, to hell with the future and the peasants. (Makes an Atheist pray there IS a Hell)

Phillips did not suggest outsourcing the Presidency and I, of course, will do everything to get JK elected #44. Phillips does raise an idea I’ve been talking about for several years: no more presidents from Texas. The place just doesn’t think American, never has. (Well, we do know a few exceptions, they are just vastly outnumbered)

There is another possibility on outsourcing. Could we get some of our votes from Canada and Europe? People who don’t want to be bothered making up their minds or getting to the polls.

OH NO, I’m starting to think like a REPUBLICAN. Probably radio waves. Where’s the tin foil?

  9. Port Controveresy Roundup

Okay, friends. Here’s a laundry list of what bloggers from both sides are saying about the port situation and the President’s promise that he’ll veto anything Congress sends him against it. Go and read. It reflects pretty much what’s coming out o…

    One for the Goose, too!
