Rep. “Duke” Cunningham Pleads Quilty to Conspiracy Charges

by Pamela Leavey

Rack up another notch for the growing list of corrupt amongst our Republican leaders. Caught with his hand in the cookie jar, California Rep. “Duke” Cunningham pleaded guilty this morning to “conspiracy and tax charges involving the sale of his home two years ago to a defense contractor at an inflated price.”

Admitting to a judge that he took bribes, Cunningham entered pleas in U.S. District Court to charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud and tax evasion for underreporting his income in 2004.

Cunningham, 63, and his wife, Nancy, used the proceeds from the $1,675,000 sale to defense contractor Mitchell Wade to buy a $2.55 million mansion in ritzy Rancho Santa Fe. Wade put the Del Mar house back on the market and sold it after nearly a year for $975,000 — a loss of $700,000.

Cunningham answered “yes, Your Honor” when asked by U.S. District Judge Larry Burns if he had accepted bribes from someone in exchange for his performance of official duties.

UPDATE: Cunningham resigns after pleading guilty.

He could get up to 10 years in prison at sentencing Feb. 27 on federal charges of conspiracy to commit bribery and fraud, and tax evasion.

  1. I live in Rep. Cunninghams district and voted against him 7 times. He has been in lock step with the Right Wing agenda his entire term as a Congressman. He Never votes for what’s best for the people, he only votes for the White House. For that reason alone it’s a happy day in North County San Diego. What’s really crazy is the local poles have a yet to be announced replacement beating Democratic candidate Busby in 2006. What a insane district..

  2. I was talking to a friend on the phone right after work, while I sit and check all the news I missed all day. Im looking all over the article trying to figure out if he was a Dem or Repug. I couldn’t figure it out. I went to another news site and cheered when I saw GOP. He thought I was nuts. I just love it when a Repug is punished for breaking the law, because it never happens.

Happy day in CA! Hopefully your district will get a Dem in his seat!

    Yep, he’s GOP corrupt.

  4. Which is why it was hard to easily determine which party he was in, unless you’d been following the Duke corruption story for the last few months.

If Duke had been a Democrat that would have been mentioned repeatedly in every article and news show the last couple days.

It’s that damn biased “liberal MSM”!

I can only conclude there a those apples again in the barrel turning brown!
I still believe in Democracy but I have to
    keep plugging at it!
