Woodward Apologizes for his Secret

by Pamela Leavey

Famous for keeping a secret – 30 years with Deep Throat, Bob Woodward apologized today to the WaPo’s executive editor for “failing to tell him for more than two years that a senior Bush administration official had told him about CIA operative Valerie Plame, even as an investigation of those leaks mushroomed into a national scandal.”

Woodward, an assistant managing editor and best-selling author, said he told Leonard Downie Jr. that he held back the information because he was worried about being subpoenaed by Patrick J. Fitzgerald, the special counsel in the case.

“I apologized because I should have told him about this much sooner,” Woodward said in an interview. “I explained in detail that I was trying to protect my sources. That’s Job No. 1 in a case like this. . . .

“I hunkered down. I’m in the habit of keeping secrets. I didn’t want anything out there that was going to get me subpoenaed.”

All of this is SO very ugly… given the nature of what we know now. The many recent disclosures in the Plame Leak case certainly have changed public opinion, as recently reported here — and may have changed the results of last year’s election, had the public known then. Many critics say that Woodward has “grown too close to White House officials.”

“The net to readers,” Woodward said, “is a voluminous amount of quality, balanced information that explains the hardest target in Washington,” the Bush administration.

Evidently, that some would call the Bush administration “Worse than Watergate,” had not prompted Bob Woodward (who valiantly worked to expose Watergate), before now to to come forward. One can only surmise at this point that Woodward was sleeping with enemy. I always admired Bob Woodward for exposing Watergate, I’m deeply troubled by the latest revelations about his Secret.

  1. Unfortunately, over the last few years Woodward revealed himself to be nothing but an access loving insider who cares for nothing except obtaining and retaining access to those in power so he can author books.

He seems especially drawn to the Bush admin types and not just for access. I think he actually likes them, agress with them on many things and feels comfortable with them.

To think what high regard I held this creature in for 30 years sickens me now. It became apparent to me that Carl Bernstein is probably the only one who actually really deserved respect. At this point, I think Bob was just lucky enough to have the friendship with Felt and was probably mainly interested in Watergate to help Felt get his revenge and for the obvious boost to his own career. I doubt open government, the right of the public to know and what was best for the country had much if anything to do with it. Though it is possible he just changed completely over those 30 years. Doubt it though.

One question. Why the hell has he been employed by the Washington Post the last few years anyway? He changed his career from journalist to author. The access he craves with those in power which allows him to write often fawning books makes it impossible for him to be an effective journalist. That is, even if wanted to be anything other than a GOP whore and apologist, which he doesn’t.

Time for you to join the club Bobby, please kill yourself. Thank you for your cooperation. :-)

I think Woodward has dropped many notches for all of in recent years – but never so much as he did today.

The MSM has been so complicite in all of this. It’s sickening.

  3. Has Bob Woodward gone over to the dark side? With well documented false and contradictory statements by Woodward regarding Valerie Plame and Traitorgate, it certainly looks that way:

  4. Dem Dude,

Sure does. I’ve heard Woodward make many statements recently which showed him going along with Bush ideas but I’ve always hoped I was wrong about him considering what he has done in the past.
