Stem Cells in Spinal Cord Injury
by RonChusidYet another benefit of stem cells discovered:
Genetically engineered stem cells can help rats’ severed spinal cords grow back together, according to a study published Tuesday.
Rats given the treatment, using stem cells taken from rat embryos, could move their legs again after their spines were severed in the lab, said the researchers’ report in the Journal of Neuroscience.
This may have important benefits for humans:
“These findings suggest the possibility that transplantation therapy using a subset of neural stem cells and neurotrophic factors might improve functional recovery in human spinal cord injury,” said Dr. Michael Selzer, a professor of neurology at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Philadelphia.
As Bill Clinton has pointed out, in this case supporting stem cell research is the pro-life position.

For GOD’s sake understand what is in the balance here. Embrionic stem cell research is the portal to curing all known disease. Frists big compromise, means nothing more than limiting this research to a very limitied database; wasted eggs from invitro. The millions of stem cells that are daily being disposed of as medical waste is still untouchable, unsuable and wasted. People are dying daily of diseases this research can likely arrest if not cure.
And yet Frist among many others would rather this genetic material be disposed of. Why?
Are these (potential humans) any less dead? No, they are considered medical waste and disposed of, not by burrial, no ceremony, they are burned. Discarded, disposed of, gotten rid of. Could these cells potentially save millions of lives, hell yes.
Bush couldn’t find his moral center with both hands and a detailed map. He has no kid fighting in Iraque and he isn’t the father of a kid with diabetes, or the son of a parent with Altsheimers. He is just a really ordinary asshole.
I didn’t vote for him, did you?
Hi Sam
Welcome to the Democratic Daily!
I didn’t vote for him either. None of us here did. We all voted for the other guy!
