Retracing the Struggle

by Pamela Leavey

Yesterday I posted about the march in Boston to “re-enact a march that Martin Luther King led 40 years ago to protest school segregation in the city.”

Here’s a great photo from the event from the Boston Globe:

  1. Pamela,

I love the kids struggling in the center to hold up the banner.
The Fourth of July in 64, our local NAACP chapter that Dad was active in, submitted a float supporting the equal housing law. We had a lot of fun creating a miniature neighborhood for the semi flat bed. The day that it was put together and the interracial mix of kids who were representing the neighbors started getting on, the meaning of the float and the fight overwhelmed me. I wanted to be on that float and threw a tantrum which Dad gave in to.
The really cool part was going down the street, having the crowd grow quiet as we all played our roles as good neighbors having a wonderful time together, and then the strong applause as they grasped the whole and we moved on..
I hope this experience does for them what mine did for me.
